Lough Boora Parklands
The Lough Boora Parkalnds is both interesting and exciting. The Boora complex in Co Offaly is one of the oldest areas of commercial production of peat and as a result was the first area in which large tracts of cutaway emerged, "cutaway" being the term used when an area comes out of production once all commercial peat has been removed. While the Bord na Mona decided what to do with these large expanses of land, Mother Nature took over reminding us what she has to offer. In 1994 a group of Bord na Mona workers formed the Lough Boora Parklands Group. The 2000 hectare site now consists of:
•Natural recolonisation
•Wetlands
•Fishing lakes - four freshwater fisheries for coarse and fly fishing
•50km of walkways ranging in length from a short stroll to 5km. ideal for a quiet walk or to take a closer look at the flora and fauna
deciduous and coniferous
•Pastureland
•Over 130 species of bird which can be seen from hides located throughout the complex
