Ballinasloe (Beal Atha na Sluaigheadh - the town
of the Ford of the Hostings). This East Galway
town occupies a strategic location on the N6
route linking Dublin and Galway. Ballinasloe is a
prosperous and expanding town and within
easy access of major regional centres: - a
commercial and market centre, an industrial centre, and a stopover for
cruising at the marina. This is a town offering a plethora of leisure
pursuits including coarse angling, boating, shooting, golf and horse riding.
There is accommodation, international cuisine, bookstores and cafes in
the centre of the town. Every Saturday finds the square bustling with
market traders where you are sure of a bargain. Annually in October,
Ballinasloe is host to one of Europe's oldest Horse Fairs, dating back to
the 1700's. This event attracts up to 100,000 visitors from all over the
world, with many returning to the town year after year.
