Belvedere House Gardens & Park
Special Notice
Our Easter Eggspress steam train has had to be cancelled for the following
reason, please can you have Mid-Ireland website updated with information,
when ever possible.
The Royal Steam Preservation of Ireland RPSI has advised Belvedere House
that due to new European rail legislation enacted on 1st January 2011 they
are not in a position to run any steam excursions in Ireland until 1st July
when they get a required safety management system in place and licence is
granted. Therefore unfortunately the very successful Easter Eggspress Steam
excursion won't run this year also the proposed "Train of Thought" Steam
excursion on Bloomsday can't go ahead either. Belvedere hopes to arrange a
Summer Steam with RPSI in July into Mullingar and a local excursion on the
same day. Please check Belvedere's website for updates on

Belvedere House Gardens & Park History
Lord Belvedere's residence originally intended as a hunting lodge was built in 1740 by eminent Palladian architect Richard Castle. The House is set on an elevated site overlooking Lough Ennell with spectacular views of the 160 acre estate, completed with Victorian Walled Garden, exotic trees and numerous follies including the infamous Jealous Wall. The House is fully restored and offers an interactive ‘Upstairs Downstairs' experience and an owner's gallery. The Walled Garden is 1.5 acre sloped garden with formal lawns, old rose beds, tumbling herbaceous borders, alpines, climbers, a fragrant herb garden and potager, and a Victorian style glasshouse with exotic plants. Set within the Belvedere stable block is a licensed restaurant with children's menu, interpretative centre and exhibition galleries. Belvedere has lakeside picnic areas, three children's playgrounds, Narnia trail, tram rides and offers family tickets.
Belvedere House Gardens & Park is open year round with gardens & parkland open until 21.00 during the summer months. Belvedere plays host to a series of seasonal family events at Easter, Halloween and Santa's Ice Palace at Christmas through the magic world of Narnia.
