Shannon Bridge Site of one of the oldest bridges still in use over the River Shannon.  Completed in 1757 and heavily fortified by the British in the Napoleonic era, some fortifications are still visible on the west bank of the river.

Ballinasloe in the eastern extremity of Co. Galway, this town has a public marina allowing traffic from the Shannon navigation to access the town.

Banagher On the western edge of Co. Offaly is a vibrant town, still a fording place on the shannon, angling and all watersports are popular along the river banks: the Shannon callows is a treasure house of wildflowers and bird life.

Birr is one of Ireland's best exaples of a Georgian Town.  It is virtually intact 18/19th century town, formal, spacious and well planned, with Georgian houses along its tree-lined malls and avenues.

Tullamore the county town on the banks of the Grand Canal is a progressive and sophisticated commercial centre offering many attractions
